Controversy follows M.I.A., but M.I.A. follows controversy as well. Duly noted is her mixtape that she released on New Years dubbed Vicki Leekx. M.I.A.’s controversy doesn’t quite match Julian Assange, and the mixtape really isn’t politically motivated in any way. With tracks named “Let Me Hump You,” “Illy Girl,” and “Bad Girls;” I’m going to assume she had no intention of going down the political path in the first place, but the name Vicki Leekx was bound to get some attention. I’m going to temporarily put aside my recent disappointments with M.I.A. (read: /\/\ /\ Y /\ and recent live performances [such as...]), and admit that for the most part I enjoyed her mixtape. It was more like a throwback to Arular and Kala, instead of staying status quo on terms of MAYA. The mixtape isn’t quite as poppy as her normal sound, but still fun and enjoyable. I cannot say that this is my favorite M.I.A. production, but it clearly shows shes back on track to making quality hits that we are used to. Vicki Leekx is available for free in the form of a single 36 minute mp3 file here. Check out the sample track and the full track list below. I sense redemption coming her way and can’t wait to be there for it.
